High speed centrifugal compressor design is based on principle to transfer the kinetic energy into potential energy. The steam is accelerated by the high speed rotating impeller, and then decelerates the flow velocity and change the flow direction, to change the kinetic energy into potential energy. The main working parts are high-speed rotating impeller and diffuser with increasing flow area.
In short, the working principle of the centrifugal compressor is to do the work for the steam through the impeller. In the impeller and diffuser flow channel, the mechanical energy is converted into the steam pressure energy by the centrifugal boosting effect and the deceleration expansion effect.
The main feature is the compact design the impeller, compressor main body and gearbox. Motors, transmissions, and compressors are usually mounted on the same base, working with low noise and high efficiency. Impeller linear velocity can reach up to greater than 400m/s, and the strength requirement is much higher; it is generally made of titanium alloy.
